  1. 1. Lopez’s main point about the power of stories as opposed to facts and knowledge is that it brings up things such as the aspect of the plot, the euphony of a story’s phrases, or how we as the reader identify with a character. In other words, it takes factual evidence as well as knowledge and makes it come alive. As far as what the author means when he states “the landscape seemed alive because of the stories”, Lopez means to say that when someone reads the words as they are coming off the page. In other words, it is as if you are right there, experiencing the phenomenon through his or her eyes.
    2. Lopez believes that in order for a story to be proven worthy, it must have all the elements of a story - that is to say syntax, mood, and figures of speech – fully developed into a harmonious sounding story that compliments itself from beginning to end. You can apply these thoughts to that of any kind of writing that you do: if you are trying to say, write a term paper, then those characteristics previously stated should be developed depending on the requirements set by the professor or instructor.

  2. 1) According to Barry Holstun Lopez’s essay titled, “Landscape and Narrative”, Lopez’s main point is to relate the relationship of nature to land. He feels that nature and the history of the land come hand to hand, hence when he states, “One learns a landscape finally not by knowing the name or identity of everything in it, but by perceiving the relationships in it—like that between the sparrow and the twig. The difference between the relationships and the elements is the same as that between written history and a catalog of events” (Lopez 886). Lopez believes that nature has a lot to tell one about its history and purpose. Lopez asserts, “The landscape seemed alive because of the stories” (886). To Lopez, the landscape has its own story and it comes to life when you experience it.

    2) Lopez believes that stories must create a landscape that contains meaning to the reader with good essentials. He comments, “Beyond this—that the interior landscape is a metaphorical representation of the exterior landscape, that the truth reveals itself most fully not in dogma but in the paradox, irony, and contradictions that distinguish compelling narratives” (Lopez 890). Lopez implies that these qualities in a work of literature create a sense of attraction towards the reader and the text. One can apply Lopez’s beliefs to the subject of writing by creating landscape in which it relates its nature to its land, metaphorically speaking.

  3. 1)Lopez’s main point about the power of stories as opposed to facts and knowledge is that land and nature are one. He feels as though one is no more important than the other and you cannot have one by itself they are equal. Also he feels as though the land has history and there are stories within the land itself. When the author writes about “the landscape seemed alive because of the stories,” he means that a story should describe the scenery so the reader or audience can actually feel and imagine the setting. He describes this as an external landscape.

2)Lopez feels that stories have to have a point to be considered worthy. This can apply his beliefs to the subject of writing in general because one cannot have a story, essay, or poem without there being a purpose. If there is no purpose to the actual piece it it is very bland and the storyteller will lose the attention of his or her audience. A story that does have a main idea is more likely to hold the reader or audience’s attention, and the story will be brought to life.

  4. 1. I think when Lopez says “ the landscape seemed alive because of the stories” he means the stories that were told to him when he was little or when he was teen it came alive when he saw the certain landscape he said they were like the stories. In his essay he talks so much about nature, I believe he thinks nature can tell a lot about where people come from. Like he says everything the way its shaped the way it is has a meaning. Its not just because it has a reason. He notices the little details and the facts about life. When he listens to a story he doesn’t look at the meaning but the overview of the story but he thinks outside of box and tries to see the meaning in each character or object
    2. I think in order to get the stories more worthy we must look a it in a deeper sense. Like they say read between the lines. We sometimes don’t take stories seriously we can try to take it serious and realize everything has its own story. We can apply his beliefs using creating a story a story where we can talk about this reasoning, why it may be? Or how it may be?

  5. In the essay, Landscape and Narrative by Barry Holstun Lopez main idea about the power of stories is land and nature are one: opposed to focus on the facts and knowledge about stories. Lopez states “ the landscape seemed alive because of the stories,” meaning that stories describe and gives vivid pictures to the audience so that they are able to use there imagination to create they story that the author has written. The description of the landscape makes the story feel real for the reader. The reader’s mind is able to enter the story and bring the reading to life.
Lopez believes that in order for a story to be proven worthy it must have all the characteristics of a story; Plot, setting, character(s), conflict. The story must flow from the beginning to end. A writer can apply Lopez’s beliefs to the any subject of writing;Poems, formal/ informal papers, research papers. When constructing your paper they should go by the instructions/ guidelines proposed by the professor. But the general idea of characteristics that a story must convey can bee applied to any type of written work.Using this technique will develop a well-developed essay, that would establish a clear idea.

  6. 1. When Lopez said “the landscape seemed alive because of the stories” it means that story should be describe in a way that the audience should able to imagine the setting and all the details and that makes the landscape alive and it will make the audience feel like they are living in the stories. Lopez also said “The stories had renewed in me a sense of the purpose of my life” (Lopez 886). Which mean the story changed his life because it has meaning to it because a landscape it’s just not only about the name or identity of everything in it, but it’s about the “relationships in it-like that between the sparrow and the twig” (Lopez 886).

    2. Lopez believe stories must be in order to be considered worthy which mean it has to have a value or purpose so the audience could related to the stories. Lopez states: “The purpose of storytelling is to achieve harmony between the two landscapes, to use all the elements of story-syntax, mood, figures of speech-in a harmonious way to reproduce the harmony of the land in the individual's interior” (Lopez 888). To make the story interesting it has to have literary techniques such as mood, syntax and “that the truth reveals itself most fully not in dogma but in the paradox, irony, and contradictions that distinguish compelling narratives” (Lopez 890).

  7. 1. Lopez main point of the power of the story was that when a story is told in oral form, the narrator creates an experience for the audience that lets them feel engaged in the story being told. Their method forms a plot in their minds. To really feel the power of the story, a dedicated listener would gain an understanding of what is being presented and take that piece to the heart and mind. "The landscape seemed alive because of the stories" basically means that the narrator acts out his story. The structure in which his story was told created an image towards his audience where they are capable of visualizing their own story and theme from the information that is given to them. The details given throughout the story clarify the scheme and the setting in which the story took place.
    2. Lopez beliefs are that a story should have all the main elements to grab the reader/audience attention. It should contain a specific structure, mood/expression and a visual physical setting. These essentials should give the reader a generalization of what the story will be about. Lopez's beliefs can be applied to general writing because when writing story or an essay, we as the authors want to create a structure to our piece in a way that quickly grabs the reader's attention. If we use these tactics that Lopez provided, our writings should give the reader(s) the proper image that we set up and should help us get our main point across.

  8. 1) Lopez’s main point about the power of stories as opposed to facts and knowledge is that stories allow readers to interpret the meaning in a story however they want, and the lesson learned by readers themselves is more effective than the lesson simply gained from the facts. When he said, “The landscape seemed alive because of the stories” he means that the stories are explained so vividly that they provide readers a sense of real experience, and that they make readers to feel like they are still in a setting of a story when they are actually in a real world.
    2) Lopez believes that in order for stories to be considered worthy they must contain all the terminologies like syntax, mood, visual settings, irony, figure of speech, and many more so that readers could connect with its content and could make deeper connection with the meaning more than a story has to exhibit. As the author states, “A story draws on relationships in the exterior landscape and projects them onto the interior landscape.” (Lopez 888) His beliefs can be used in when writing essays, poems, or any general writings to get the message across clearly and to give the readers every possible ways to make their own connection with the story.

  9. 1) Lopez's point is that stories combine sensory details that allow the reader to envision an idea of what the writer is discussing. Whereas facts and knowledge don't usually have passion behind them. When the author wrote "the landscape seemed alive because of the stories" I believe he meant that due to all of the details the story was extremely vivid and easy to imagine. And the storytellers did not embellish to a point where the story seemed unbelievavle.

2)Lopez believes that in order for stories to be considered worthy they must use literary elments fluently. The writer must combine syntax, mood and figures of speech "in a harmonious way," in order to engage the reader. His beliefs can be applied to writing in general because if the author performs his suggestions, the reader would be able to connect with the reader. By proper use of the literary elements in any form of writing, the author would become a better writer.

  10. 1) Barry Holstun Lopez’s main point about the power of stories as opposed to facts and knowledge is that the power of stories can combine the landscape and the narrative to be as one. With this, stories can open a person’s mind to imagination and allow them to think outside the box. Also stories permit people to have many possibilities of a situation, whereas facts and knowledge doesn’t allow much creativity. With facts and knowledge there could be only one logical explanation and outcome. When Lopez writes “The landscape seemed alive because of the story”, I think he means landscape seemed to have more meaning because of the story (Lopez 886). After hearing the story about a man hunting a wolverine from a snow machine, Lopez came out of the host’s house and looked around the landscape. The landscape may have resembled the description of where the wolverine and the hunter may have been, so Lopez might have imagined scenes of the stories taking place in front of him, thus bring the landscape to life.
    2) Lopez believes that in order for a story to be worthy, it must draw a relationship between the listener and the storyteller. The listeners have to have trust in the storyteller’s knowledge about the story. And the Storyteller must take responsibility making sure the story comes alive to the listeners. He/she must do certain things such as setting the physical setting, or temper with expressions. Also Lopez claims that the stories should make a relationship between the exterior and interior landscapes of it. He also says that there should be “ harmony between the two landscapes, to use all of the elements of the story- syntax. Moods, figure of speech-in a harmonious way to reproduce the harmony of the land in the individual’s interior” ( Lopez 888).

  11. 1. Lopez’s main point about the power of stories as opposed to facts and knowledge is that stories provide the listener with a greater pleasure than if they had read the facts from a book. The listener is able to find this pleasure “for different reasons – for the euphony of its phrases, an aspect of the plot, or because one identifies with one of the characters” (Lopez, 887). The story is more than just facts and knowledge it allows the listener to possibly find a balance within them that the storyteller provides through combining two landscapes.
When the author stated “the landscape seemed alive because of the stories” he meant that the landscape looked upon validated the story he heard. The landscape that was provided in the story was similar to the one he gazed upon and this in itself made him feel pleasure in the task that he had to do.

    2. Lopez feel in order for stories to be considered worthy it must “achieve harmony between the two landscapes, to use all elements of story –syntax, mood, figures of speech−in a harmonious way to reproduce the harmony of the land in the individual’s interior” (Lopez, 888). The listener gains a deeper understanding from the story than just what is on the surface; they can relate it to themselves to obtain a sense of balance.
This belief can be applied to writing because the writer looks to invoke a reaction from the reader that is not just on the surface level. The writer wants the reader to make a connection to their work that leaves a mark.

  12. 1. Lopez’s main point about the power of stories opposed to facts and knowledge is that the main point conveys the meaning of the story, as well as the plot. It brings the reader to make a connection with the characters in the story. The power of the story entails that we have evidence and the knowledge we develop makes the story come to life. On the other hand, when the author writes, “the landscape seemed alive because of the story”, Lopez is trying to explain that the words on a page makes the landscape the setting come to life to its reader. The words on a page may being enough detail to make you feel as if you were part of the story. Some details are so enhanced that the reader feels as if their experiencing the event that the character is undergoing.

    2. Lopez believes that for a story to be proven worthy, the story must have included all the elements that are necessary to write a story. That is that the story must include a mood, tone, syntax, and figure of speech. Lopez says that a story should sound harmonies and flow from its beginning to its end. He also states that these steps should be taken into place in any paper you write in life.

  13. 1) In “Landscape and Narrative” by Barry Holstun Lopez, his main point regarding the power of stories is their ability to captivate its readers through vivid detail and intense description. He notes that we all enjoy a story for different reasons such as “the euphony of its phrases, an aspect of the plot, or because one identifies with the characters” (887). For him, exhilaration and enthusiasm are the emotions running through him when he hears or reads a good story. He says that “the landscape seemed alive because of the stories”, which means that the detail was so rich that he could feel apart of the story. The descriptions were so picturesque that he could combine nature and narrative as if he were there as a spectator.
    2) Lopez believes that story must be told for its own sake and not simply as a vehicle for an idea. The subject should not matter much, but intimacy does. Syntax, mood, tone, and figure of speech should be present if the story should be considered worthy.

  14. 1)As opposed to facts and knowledge’s, Lopez’s main point about the power of stories is to combine an oral yet very descriptive plot or setting. Using creative details allows the reader to imagine and vision a very clear and illustrative setting as to what point the writer is trying to make. When Lopez writes “the landscape seemed alive because of his stories” I think he means that the story being told should be written in a way where readers can display a vivid picture in their minds. In other words the story should come out to you with details that let readers know what exactly is going on and also where it is occurring.
2)In order for stories to be considered worthy Lopez believes that the stories must have a beginning, middle, and end. Examples regarding this would be a setting, characters, conflicts, a plot, and of course a theme. To Lopez, explained details convey a deeper meaning which makes the story very realistic than it is already. I do however agree with Lopez. In general stories and all other writings should come out to the reader. Expressive thoughts should be made , as well as an overall meaning of the story itself.

  15. 1. Lopez’s main point about the power of stories as opposed to facts and knowledge is that stories should leave the listeners/readers with a mental image of the story. The author should use descriptive words to exercise the reader’s mind. Stories should make the readers have an exaggerated reaction as opposed to thinking, “that story was nice”. Lopez’ quote, “the landscape seemed alive because of the stories” means that after hearing the story, the narrator was able to visualize the details of the story in real life. This makes it seem like the landscape is in front of them. The narrator felt more connected to the story because they used the story’s details to create a vast image in their head.

    2. For stories to be considered worthy, Lopez believes that stories should paint a picture in one’s head. Lopez says, “The purpose of storytelling is to achieve harmony between the two landscapes, to use all the elements of the story- syntax, mood, figures of speech- in a harmonious way…” If an author uses literary elements correctly, readers will be more drawn to the piece. When stories have great use of imagery, the story automatically becomes more interested and readers look at the piece with deeper meaning. The story should have a meaning that certain or all audiences can relate to.

  16. 1). Lopez's main point about the power of the stories as opposed to facts and knowledge is to connect the two landscape, external and internal, when telling the stories. "the landscape seemed alive because of the stories" I think it means when the storyteller tells a story, the tones, plots and setting can provide listeners to feel that they are part of the story, which they can really feel the landscape and the surrounding.
2). Lopez's belief for stories to be considered worthy, they must have "the euphony of its phrases, an aspect of the plot, identifies with the character." His belief can be used in all kinds of writing. When a writing contains euphony phrases, or people can make connections with the story, readers can have a better interest to continue reading it.

  17. 1) Lopez’s main point about the power of stories as opposed to facts and knowledge is that story telling provides the audience a chance to enjoy hearing a story as they pay attention to the details of the story. Story telling seems to grasps the attention of people because it is being used as a source of entertainment/enjoyment. When the author begins saying that “the landscape seemed alive because of the stories”, I think he means that the stories literally tend to paint a vivid picture of what is going on in the story and maybe even how setting of the story helps make the story seem more realistic. I think he means that the stories are so detailed that it ‘s as if you were in the story watching everything that was occuring in the story. Like as if you are watching a play or if you were in a play.
    2) Lopez believes that stories must have some elements of literature such as imagery, mood, syntax, and figure of speech and that it should be able to grasps the audience’s attention through these elements. When it comes to the subject of writing, these should be applied to help the audience understand the purpose of the story by analyzing the elements to comprehend why they are being used and how do they make the story the way it is.

  18. Barry Holstun Lopez’s main point about the power of stories as opposed to facts and knowledge. Lopez states “ the landscape seemed alive because of the stories,” The main point regarding the power of stories is their ability to draw attention to its readers through strong vivid detail and intense description.Lopez believes that nature has a lot to tell one about its history and purpose. Lopez sets a mood like, “The landscape seemed alive because of the stories”. The landscape has its own story and it comes to life when you experience it.

Lopez believe stories must have certain ingredients in order to be proven worthy it must have all the characteristics of a story; Plot, setting, character(s), conflict, climax. I agree with this because if there is no purpose to the actual piece, it will be too boring and the storyteller will lose the attention of his/her audience.

  19. Lopez’s main point about the power of stories as opposed to facts and knowledge, is related the understanding and knowing the plot, and how we as readers connect with the characters. ”the landscape seemed alive because of the stories” Through the stories read one is able to make a connection to the author via the text. They can then understand what the author means in a greater way.2. Lopez believes that stories must contain substance and a sort of natural content in order for them to be considered worthy. There must be meaning throughout the whole piece. You can easily use this knowledge to your advantage. One must understand that the stories one writes have to be consistent throughout its whole.

  20. 1.) Lopez’s main point about the power of stories as opposed to facts and knowledge is that it doesn’t matter if the story is factual, the writer must make it seem factual.
When Lopez writes that “the landscape seemed alive because of the stories” he means that people are able to imagine a landscape, and experience the story due to the descriptions that the author provides. The reader is able to connect with the story because they can feel and see things and see relationships between things in the environment of the story.

2.) Lopez believes that stories must contain relationships between things in the environment. The story must flow to a point where the reader is almost convinced that everything being said is factual. He also believes that the story teller should be able to “use his story telling skill to heighten and emphasize certain relationships”, to make a story successful.
I could apply his beliefs to the subject of writing in general by looking at my own experience with certain stories. There have been times where I’ve obtained a feeling of enthusiasm after a story, as he stated in his essay. I agree when he says that there are relationships between things in stories.

  21. 1. Lopez states that it does not matter if the story is based in fact as long as the author makes it seem that the story is real. The writer should be able to create a plausible environment through which the reader can connect with the story and characters.
    2. Lopez thinks that there should be certain elements in the story such as a cohesive plot and character development and tone in order for the reader to derive a meaning from the story.

  22. Barry Holstun Lopez's poem, "Landscape and Narrative is about how nature and the perception it has is well detailed, however society isn't always aware of the way it presents itself. This misunderstanding of nature, in effect, then affects the true quality of the stories told of.
(1)Lopez's main point about a story's power versus fact and knowledge is that if told with utter truth and as detailed as the very nature of what happened then the effect will far overwhelm its purpose, oppossed to just providing unclear, misunderstood details. This means if one must observe nature in a very keen way, down to the most unnoticeable, miniscule level then what he/she states as truth in a story shall envision the reality of what really takes place.
(1b) His interpretation of stating "the landscape seemed alive because of the stories" means that the story told by the hunter very much identifies with the same surrounding he is in. In essence he sees the story as so true annd vibrant that he know it really happened because the tiniest of details is very much presented to him.
    (2) He believes in order for a story to be worthy it must closely, if not completely match the subject of which it speaks, and with doing so it must effectively tell the truth, while the nature in which it is told should transition through the most natural form. this, by means is to assert the use of syntax, figure of speech etc. in such a way the it too reflex the beauty of nature.
(2b) we as students can apply this to our writings by providing truth, carefully drawing connections between ideas rather than fill the gaps with imagination. By applying accurate details to one's writing, the syncronized use of truth and overwhelming technique will bring forth an incredible story which far more captivates the reader than informing them.
