Prelude: Byelinkov, upset with himself after his fight with Varinka, decides to apologize to her. Yet at the same time, Varinka is still confused. She is currently in the kitchen, conversing with her brother, Lev, about the argument and what her next step of action should be.

We live in a world were everyone make there own decision because we have free will. Morals are something that set by the society, they tell you what is right and what is wrong. There are two types of morals set by people one society morals where the society decide what is, and the personal morals you feel its right and wrong. In both poems of Robert Frost there are morals but two different types of morals, because both narrators are different.
ReplyDeleteRacism has been a controversial topic in history. In Langston Hughes’s poem titled “Theme for English B”, he is asked by his instructor to write a page and to “let that page come out of” him, in which he expresses his feelings and thoughts of his life (l.4). In Wole Soyinka’s poem titled “Telephone Conversation”, the speaker states how he/she is looking for a new apartment and calls the landlady. The speaker then immediately jumps to the topic of race and calls it a “self-confession” (l.4). Both speakers make a connection on how racism has played a part in their life and society.
ReplyDeleteEvery person is different in their own way. Some people have a more out going personality some people have a very shy personality, then there is the people who always seem to be on their own and choose to be away from all the rest. Everyone has a different personality and every individual is unique in their own way. Just because we cant understand a the way someone is thinks or acts this does not make them "weird" or "strange" who are we to judge other people. Everybody's individuality is what makes our world so interesting. If every person was the same the world we live in would be very boring.
ReplyDeletePrelude: Byelinkov stands in the garden with the envelope in hand. Varinka rides the bicycle to her brother Alastar. Varinka explains to Alastar about the altercation that happened in the garden. Alastar agrees to come to the house to confront Byelinkov about the situation. Meanwhile Byelinkov is in the garden thinking about the what he has done. Byelinkov question’s himself about his realtionship “Should I be with her?” Varinka and Alastar enter’s the garden.

ReplyDeleteVarinka rides off on her bike to her brother, Feodor's house still laughing at the image of her love Byelinkov falling off the bike. Meanwhile, Byelinkov enters his house fumbling with the little pieces of torn paper he strewed over his garden.

It seems like we are living in a society that racism never despaired from the history. In the poem called “Theme for English B” by Langston Hughes, show us the reality of 1952 and how race and color played big role in society at that time of history. “Theme for English B,” is based on an assignment given to him by his English instructor at his college. He only has to write a page of whatever he wants and whatever he writes his true. Hughes letting us knows how he perceives life or what he believes to be true about life.
ReplyDeleteIn life, people go through many experiences that alters their way of thinking and their way of viewing life. People will always have their own perspectives on life based on the things they have witnessed along the course of life no matter how similar or different everyone's experiences are from each other. People may not see eye to eye on certain things because their experiences may differ heavily from each others or just because of the fact that people are different from each other. Often times, people make the mistake of jumping to conclusions, passing judgments, and or, criticizing others just because they can only see things through their own perspectives. People do not always have to agree with each other about certain things but it can help if people try to get a deeper understanding of each other's opinions and perspectives by asking about the who's, what's, when's, where's, why's, and how's. People would be able to think twice once they get the deeper understanding of someone else's beliefs before jumping to conclusions and judging people. This enables people to step outside the box and see things in a different light despite whether or not they have a different opinion.
ReplyDeletePoems are inspirational, however to the readers, who find poems puzzling, they often look the same. Therefore understanding literary terms can help the readers to discover differences and similarities present in poems. For instance the poems, “The mending wall” and “The road not taken ” by Robert Frost can be compared and contrasted by using literary terms such as settings, characters, conflicts and narrator.

ReplyDelete"The man in a case" Act 2
ReplyDeletePrelude: Byelinkiv enters his house with the envelope. He puts it in a drawer, then he sits in his office and starts to translate a Greek literature. Meanwhile Varinka rides her bicycle back to her brother, Feodor, thinking and laughing at moment she just had with her beloved Byelinkiv.

ReplyDeletePreclude—
(BYELINKOV, alone in the garden, he ponders through, as his beloved ride of into light. He contemplates with the pieces of the paper in the envelope. Singing once again “Anthropos in love! Anthropos in love!” )
E. B. White’s Education has a deep meaning behind the story itself. He describes the unease that comes with moving from the rural neighborhood to an urban one. He describes the differences between the two settings and his worry for his son’s adaptation. This sensation can also be applied to other situations in life.
ReplyDeleteRobert Frost’s The Road Not Taken has the speaker faced with the decision on which road to follow. This concept of the road is very much related to the idea of the choices we have to make in life and the paths that we chose to follow.
ReplyDeleteBylinkov stands thinking
ReplyDeleteBylinkov – what have I gotten myself into? Am I really ready to marry and settle down with this women is so much different than I am… yes it is true, it’s convenient that we met, but my heart does not flutter when she passes or skips when she speaks . Yes she is a nice woman but is she the right women for me?
(Mean while Varinka is on her way to her brothers house she drifts off into a daydream and thinks)
Varinka – Ahh how lucky I am to have met and found a man of such stature that loves and is willing to except me at such a late age in my life. Although he is younger than me I feel as if he is older being the Greek and Latin he can teacher me so much. Wow I am truly in love with the man of my dreams…
Lavino –Varinka my sister back so soon?
The Road Not Taken and Stopping By The Woods On A Snowy Night by Robert Frost, both show the reader how Robert Frost is on a journey he feels he has not completed. In Stopping By The Woods On A Snowy Night the traveler is tired but knows he has a path that he must continue. While the traveler in The Road Not Taken, is reminiscing about the path he did not take. These two poems may reflect Frost's confusion about the path he has chosen for himself.
ReplyDeletePatricia Grace's "Butterflies" showcases the different values and ideas people have due to where they may come from. As seen in the text, the young girl and her grandparents live in a rural countryside area, while her teacher is more familiar with the city life. Their reactions to the girl killing a butterfly are radically different simply because of the lifestyle they are accustomed to.
ReplyDeleteI plan to revise my English B paper by make it flow and rhythm better since the class did say it kind of sounded like a rap. I’m also going to add a concrete structure but I really want to focus on the conflict, “Man vs. Society”. My English was already heading that route so I really want it too shine out to show a deeper understanding of this conflict. This might mean having a metaphoric aspect in the piece to highlight many different part of “Man vs. Society” and show the bigger picture.
ReplyDelete*Byelinkov exits the garden and enters the house through the back door. He walks over to his desk and tosses the envelope with the ripped material inside in the abyss of Latin & Greek assignments. Varinka has gone to her brother’s house which gives Byelinkov time to freely talk to himself.*
ReplyDeleteByelinkov: This girl, she smothers me with a love that I do not truly want. Varinka & I are complete polar opposites yet I still stay. Who does she think she is? Humiliating me, trying to change who I am. It’s unfortunate that I cannot share my unrefined thoughts because she is weak-hearted. But I need to get out of this rut that I am in. I need an escape. But do I really have the courage to follow what my head is saying? Or should I continue to let my heart feed her these lies…?
Always expect the unexpected was a phrase that has shown its true meaning thoughout life. In the play "The Man In The Case" written by Wendy Wasserstein the phrase is further explained with different scenarios between Byelinkov and his soon to be bride Varinka. They both face situations that they never really agree to which makes them so different. Both individuals are complete opposites but also love each other. Now who said opposites don't attract.
ReplyDeleteLove, a four letter, one syllable word. How might one express it? There are a million and one different ways one may express love. The love one may feel towards a mother is unique, different from any other love one may experience. This love is nearly there when an individual is born. Unlike this love, the love you have for a spouse or significant other is developed. In "The Man In The Case," written by Wendy Wasserstein, Byelinkov and Varinka are two middle aged adults who seem to love each other. The love that Varinka has for her husband is sweet and pure, on the other hand, Byelinkov's love is not expressed as much. Although they do not express their feelings in the same manner, their feelings are indefinitely shown. Love is a wonderful thing to experience and there are many different ways to express it.
ReplyDeleteOver the centuries, the reasons why two couples unite in marriage have changed. People have had their own reasons why they should marry the other sex. If it was for beneficial reasons or because of love, there is a reason. In the screenplay " The Man in a Case" by Wendy Wasserstein, both characters have come to the conclusion of their own reason why they wanted or should marry one another.
ReplyDeleteWe live in a world in which most decisions are made for us either our government, parents, even our lovers but why pass down those decisions made into other generations. In "Mending Wall" by Robert Frost a character carries his fathers saying of "good fences make good neighbors" but not only does the character follow this saying of his father, he makes the conflict his own.
ReplyDeleteScene 2, act 1-
ReplyDeleteA couple days went by, Byelinkov still going through his thoughts. In his kitchen he is repairing his galoshes he had damaged while attempting to manuever Varinka's bike. He ponders there in the early morning as a knock is heard on his front door. He curiously goes to open the door just to find Varinka greeting him with the sun shining ever so bright in his eyes.
Byelinkov: Good morning Varinka! You are as early as the morning sun. What brings you to me this time?
Varinka: Good morning to you Byelinkov! I came over because I felt you were here all alone and I figured it was necessary we get more acquainted. I also brought for you some things which you might need sooner or later.
(Byelinkov flys the door open, looking suddenly confused as Varinka slithers by)
In Robert Frost's poem "The Road not taken" a very interesting and common idea is brought into mind. By discussing the narrarators point of view ,tone and characters motivation i will assist the readers in understanding whats behind Frost's bewildering poem.
ReplyDeleteLove can be reached in unexpected and seemingly impossible ways as displayed in Wendy Wasserstein's play "The Man in the Case" between Byelinkov and Varinka who appear to be polar opposites. Byelinkov views love in a very mechanical way while Varinka has a naive view of it. The interaction between them and my response to the play will be detailed by analyzing the tone, setting, and characters' motivation.
ReplyDeleteoften in life, man seeks to be accepted b his peers. He craves the feeling that comes with being included and liked by others. When one cannot fit in, it tends to make that person feel ostracized and left out. Man's struggle to assimalate is a ongoing issue in society.
ReplyDelete..."We all wish that we could see into the future to see the outcome of the choices we make but it just doesn’t work that way. I have faced such a split in the road and choose my path but I always wondered what it would have been like if I had chosen the other road"..
